croatia/cologne 2007

The photos contained in this gallery are from an annual trip that we do to Croatia to visit relatives. The locations photographed in Croatia are from the island Krk. We passed through Cologne, Germany on the way to/from Croatia. Since I have been to Croatia many times, and this was my first trip to Cologne, there are more photos of Cologne. The Cathedral in Cologne is incredible.

 • We stayed in the village of Kremenic, on the Island Krk. This is a view from the bedroom window. That is the Kvarner bay, the mountain in the background is called "uchka" - phonetically spelled. "uchka" is on the Istrian Penninsula.

 • A sunset lit view of the mainland from one of my favorite parts of the island -Saint Mark. Saint Mark is the ruins of an old chapel, on a penninsula. It is a very peaceful place.

The mainland is part of the Dinaric Alps. They extend for 400 miles (645 km) along the coast of the Adriatic Sea (northwest-southeast), from the Julian Alps. The Dinaric Alps comprise the most rugged and extensively mountainous area of Europe outside of the Caucasus Mountains, Alps and Scandinavian Mountains.

 • On the island Krk, the old way of life co-exists with tourism. This is a typical barn found in the area. This one is finished with Stucco, but many are stone. I love this type of window, it is very welcoming.

 • Many residents have cats. They really earn thier keep by keeping the vicinity clear of pests.
The month of May seems to be the time when kittens are abundant. This kitten was checking me out and keeping a safe distance, while under the watchful eye of it's mother.
They quickly approved of my presence - food is a great incentive.

 • It is hard to find a roof that does not use Terra Cotta. My brother in law was repairing a roof that had tiles on it that were 150 years old, and still could have reused some of the tiles. I think he replaced them. They are amazingly simple, functional, and durable.

 • You must park your car out of the city proper, and walk into Verbnik. Most streets are too old, and narrow, to accomodate cars. This is a snapshot of one of the most extreme examples.

This is supposedly the most narrow street in the world - yes it is a street. You must walk sideways down it.

 • The Verbnik area is known for Zlatina wine (red and white). Many residents make and sell wines out of thier houses. They will have a chair out front with wines on it for sale.

This gentleman was selling wine. He offered me a complimentary glass. How could I turn that down? So, we chatted a bit over some wine. Of course, I bought a bottle of wine from him. How could I not do so, after he just gave me a free glass? He was a good salesman, but also a nice fellow. Thanks Mr. Volaric!

 • On the return trip, we spend two days in Cologne, Germany. This is a photo of the Cathedral spires from a distance. The cornerstone was laid in 1248. It was not completed until the 1880 - over 600 years to build.

I love how the gargoyle on the left is resting its front paws on a head. Unfortunately, they are working on the exterior - notice the scaffolding in the background.
