Read MoreMojave National Preserve - Kelso depot. Kelso was a Union Pacific Depot that was at the bottom of a 10 mile long 6%? grade. The grade is so steep that in the steam days, a "helper engine" was needed to get trains up the hill. Kelso had a source of water for the engines. This depot housed rail workers, and was the center of the community. It was built in 1905, used till the 1960's, and refurbished in 1992. Diesel changed all that. It is now a national park station. The "lunch room" is not in use - it was for the workers. You can have a seat at the counter, though.
